Sun Microsystems to unveil new chip architecture
(http://biz.yahoo.com/rf/990802/f.html)

From the article: "...Sun is not targeting the personal computer market with this single-chip family, but instead will focus on

Walter, It seems to be another Jini type announcement form SUN. But
this time it is from hardware front and yet it is still driven from
Bill Joy. This gentleman was the original RISC pipeline engine
designer for SPARC chip. His understanding and original thinking
is second to none in computing architecture and operating system.
MAJC was started four years ago and probably by now they should
have samples to talk about at least. Giving the recent track record
of SUN's delivery on its promise, MAJC could be one more major
arsenal for SUN to ultimately challenge wintel. The processor looks
like a VLIW style highly modular and scalable RISC processor which
might run native Java OS. It would be a major shakeup in processor
business if it indeed takes off and might bring new life to this
bloody business and give a new hope for semiconductor industry.
But the processor design is tough business, while a good design
and a good market are important to its success, the manufacturing
hurdle would be another major challenge if MAJC is targeting to
the consumers. SUN doesn't have a good record to deliver a high
yield product. But the VLIW modular design inherently is less
complicated than CISC type processor, and if the new refreshing
TI(SUN's manufacturing partner) can do a better job this time.
We might see this MAJC comes out in celeron price and still makes
money. Well time will tell, I would deeply enjoy it if it really
takes off.

>Time to buy more SUNW ? New Chip

Sun has been in this arena for some. Check out C-Cube,

c-cube.com
c-cube.com

a major supplier digital video encoding and decoding
systems and chips. The leading edge of their product
line is based on a micro-SPARC core.

The SPARC core is in a number of decoder and set top
box designs already.
