Papua New Guinea: Another gas customer likely to sign up soon
The National, August 3
By KEVIN PAMBA

PORT MORESBY: Ergon, the next major customer for the PNG to Queensland gas project, is likely to sign up before the end of this month.

Ergon, like the first major customer, Energex, will act as the aggregator for the northern Queensland block of the gas market, Chevron Services Australia's external affairs manager, Cliff Leggoe, said here on Friday.

Mr Leggoe said the customers from the northern block - from Gladstone to Townsville - were mainly power producers and Ergon will act on their behalf in signing up as the next major customer.

He said the project partners hoped all the buyers can be signed up by the end of the year.

Mr Leggoe also said that Queensland Premier Peter Beattie and other leaders from Queensland including two senators from the Australian federal parliament will be in Port Moresby by the middle of this month to sign the gas sales agreement reached last week with Energex with the PNG Government and project partners.

He said although the agreement with Energex was reached in Queensland, to meet legal requirements, it had to be officially signed in PNG where the gas belongs.

Mr Leggoe said the new minister for Petroleum and Energy, Tommy Tomscoll, who was briefed last Friday on the project by himself and Project director, Dr John Powell, was pleased with the project.

He said the minister had to be brought up to date with the project so that he is fully informed of the developments taking place.

Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta has also been briefed on the project and has expressed support for the project.
