latest confirmed bid for the domain name Drugs.com has reached
$260,000 in a closely watched auction that closes this Friday, Aug. 6
at 5 p.m. Pacific Time.
Several analysts have predicted that the final auction price will
exceed $1 million. The auction can be viewed at www.greatdomains.com.
"Investors can purchase shares of the recent IPO Drugstore.com,
which is currently valued at over $2 billion, or they can buy the
entire undeveloped Web site Drugs.com and use this as a platform to
enter this burgeoning industry," said GreatDomains.com Chief Executive
Officer Jeffrey Tinsley. "You can guess what I think the better
investment is."
Although not currently developed, the site receives more than
4,000 "hits" each day just from people typing "Drugs.com" into their
browsers.
To support the auction, GreatDomains.com has placed display
advertising in today's Wall Street Journal to ensure that all
interested parties are aware of the auction.
"We have been asked who we believe will emerge as bidders,"
Tinsley said. "The following list comes to mind: major pharmaceutical
companies including Amgen, Baxter, Bayer, Cardinal Health, Bindley
Western, McKesson HBOC, Genentech, Glaxo Wellcome, ICN, Johnson &
Johnson, Merck, Novartis, Pfizer, Sandoz, Schering-Plough,
Warner-Lambert, and Eli Lilly; managed prescription providers
including Merck-Medco and PCS; chain drug stores including CVS, Rite
Aid, Longs, Sav-on Drugs, and Walgreens; Internet destinations
including Amazon.com, AOL, Yahoo, Microsoft, Go.com; as well as online
prescription and health care providers such as DrKoop.com,
PlanetRX.com, Soma, Mother Nature, MedicineShoppe, Healtheon, WebMD,
Mediconsult, RX.com, Drugstore.com, and 1800contacts.com."
Other high-profile names offered at auction include Loans.com,
Prospectus.com, Houses.com, ShoppingMall.com, Addresses.com,
Athletes.com, LawOffices.com, Selling.com, Sportscast.com, Tobacco.com
and Slim.com as well as approximately 50,000 other domain names listed
for sale at www.greatdomains.com.
