I recently read an article about research on effective liars, which suggests that the most effective liars are able to convince themselves of the truth of the statement at the time it is made. I once shared office space with a lawyer who called it "believing your own bullshit." It can be very effective for those who are adept at the technique, as long as they are selective about the bullshit they buy into. I don't believe I could pull it off, myself.

Thanks for the thoughts, X. The mayor and other officials are well aware of what's going on -- the result is a significant part of the town's budget.

No one spends a dime in Hardeeville, as it is -- except for locals shopping at the Piggly Wiggly and a few other businesses.

The Hilton Head paper (Island Packet) strongly backs a nail-'em-all approach to motorists (somewhat understandable given the vast number of visiting bozos cluttering up the streets most of the year). If you ever visit, please note a very abrupt drop in speed limit coming off Broad Creek bridge onto the south part of the island. Even the paper seems a little embarrassed about that one.

There was a time when an $87 ticket only momentarily pissed you off. Problem is, these often meaningless events are now used by the ins. companies to gouge you for years.

Hey, Christopher -- what poor slug with a real problem you billing while screwing around on Feelies this morning? Not an anti-attorney rant -- I've had good and bad experiences and have life-long pals and family in the profession. I do know about as many lawyer jokes as anybody, though :-)
