Does anyone know if aapl is selling these at a BIG discount to FreeMac??

This is what I'd like to know. How is FreeMac getting these machines? Have them been buying them periodically over the past year?

"Say hello to my little friend!"

Dennis- I don't know about discount-

but I expect Freemac won't get any special deals.

They will enjoy a lower cost of ownership than WINTEL, and a longer active service life from the iMac than a wintel.

They will also have customer perception that iMac is easier to use (one I happen to have, too) and that a free iMac is better than a free wintelclone.

Is this a big deal for apple? I really don't think so. I think it is just the beginning of Macintosh retaking some market share as the internet becomes the killer app the requires everyone to get a computer.

Anyway you cut it, it represents, very approximately, at least a 15% to 25% boost in iMac unit sales (If Eric Yang will forgive the seat of the pants guestimate). How much of this would eat into other sales is anybody's guess, but a single commitment to this many units is big! Very big!
I would expect freemac.com to stretch out its orders as much as possible, probably having to meet certain milestones to satisfy investors. However, two years isn't such a long haul. Even if they only get half way there, it's still a big step forward.
