Greg -
There are several reasons why your timetable is too pessimistic.
- no rewiring necessary - phone line (tut) and powerline networking will improve over the rest of this year to be about as good as 10 meg ethernet on twisted pair.
- Next round will probably be wireless, waiting on the 8 Mb standard to become mainstream, also in the next 6 months or so.
- Then new machines or existing machines with converters will be easily networked.
- The cable guys and others will provide compelling components which will make networked home more attractive
- All of the traditional network problems (addressing, segmenting, etc.) will be invisible.
- The technology is already in place and really what is missing is the reason why customers would care.

Actual use should be no harder than cable TV...
