What's with this crap? Why is it always Divicom's headend equipment? Isn't there some other damn headend equipment they could use? <GRIN!> Mindport Successfully Demonstrates Interoperable Conditional Access at CableLabs Tests; OpenCable Solutions Demonstrated in Partnership with Industry Leaders 08/02/1999 Business Wire (Copyright (c) 1999, Business Wire) SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 2, 1999--Mindport Inc. announced today the successful completion of interoperability testing of the company's POD (Point of Deployment) removable security module for conditional access (CA) applications in North America. The tests, sponsored by CableLabs and held at their facility in Louisville, CO last week were designed to assess the progress made by industry toward the development of removable security modules as required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Mindport is the technology division of MIH Limited (Nasdaq:MIHL), and a leading media commerce technology provider for electronic pay media, interactive applications and the Internet. The FCC has mandated that security functions of consumer devices used for broadband reception be decoupled from the navigation appliance. Once this is achieved, the content or service provider such as a cable TV or broadband platform operator will be able to supply the CA function locally. Navigation appliances such as a set-top box (STB), TV receiver, PC etc., can then be purchased independently by the consumer from local retail channels and fitted with the CA appropriate to their chosen broadband vendor. CableLabs responded to this mandate by creating the OpenCable certification process. This provides standards, specifications and testing criteria that vendors must meet in order to comply with the FCC requirements. At the recent CableLabs tests, Mindport worked in partnership with DiviCom Inc. (Nasdaq:CUBE) who supplied the head-end equipment and SCM Microsystems (Nasdaq:SCMM) with whom Mindport has jointly developed its POD removable security module. Mindport's POD solution is compliant with both the Electronic Industries Association (EIA) NRSS-B and the OpenCable POD specifications. Mindport successfully completed tests that required conditional access vendors to demonstrate that their prototype POD removable security modules could be extracted from a digital set-top box. Another aspect of the test was the successful demonstration of interoperability between several of the participating conditional access vendor's POD modules in the same set-top box. Conditional access vendors who participated in these tests included Mindport, General Instrument (NYSE:GIC), Scientific Atlanta (NYSE:SFA), NDS, Philips, and Nagra. Phil Braden President of Mindport Inc. said, "We are extremely pleased with our successful participation in these OpenCable interoperability tests. These tests are highly significant because they demonstrate that an open system is a practical reality for the future of the North American cable television market. The success of interoperability tests on the part of several vendors presents a credible alternative to the established systems that populate the North American pay TV landscape. Interoperability is good for the industry. It means that in the future, cable TV operators will truly have the choice and flexibility to create a best-of-breed system for their digital operations." "Mindport is a highly experienced global end-to-end system solutions provider with cable, satellite and ISP customers in more than 50 countries," Braden continued. "We are committed to open standards and are extremely well versed with the challenges of successfully implementing multi-vendor, interoperable systems. The development of the POD module, combined with our proven technology portfolio and experience will enable Mindport to provide open, standards-based solutions to the North American cable television market. Our success at these tests is a tangible proof of our commitment to the OpenCable process and to our plans for expansion into the North American market that were announced during the NCTA Cable 99 trade exhibition in June this year."
