FYI, I recently pulled S&P 500 data from Yahoo Finance for 1985
through YTD 1999 and found that for this time frame the May through
October and November through April period were IDENTICAL in return.
The monthly average return was +1.2% for both 6 month periods.

With this data I did confirm that September was the worst month,
yielding -0.6% vs. the 1.2% average. Here's the monthly results that
I got.

Average
Date % Chng
Dec 1.7
Nov 0.0
Oct -0.4
Sep -0.6
Aug 1.1
Jul 2.2
Jun 2.6
May 2.3
Apr 0.7
Mar 0.9
Feb 3.0
Jan 0.9

I will look into a longer timeframe, closer to that used by Yale
Hirsch.
