Home Digital Appliance Shipments Rise Sharply In Jan-Jun
Date:02-Aug-99

Nikkei English News via NewsEdge Corporation : TOKYO (Nikkei)--Domestic shipments of digital home appliances grew more than 30% year on year in the January-June period, the Electronic Industries Association of Japan said Friday.
DVD players marked a 37.8% increase in shipments to 139,000 units. DVD shipments are expected to be boosted in the second half by the release this autumn of a Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (6752) model that can play both music and video.

Shipments of portable MiniDisc players and other MD devices climbed 34.6% to 1.32 million units. Shipments of other audio equipment were steady. Shipments of CD and radio-cassette players rose 7.1% to 1.37 million units.

Shipments of color TVs declined 3.7% to 4.19 million units, but the rate of decline slowed from a 10.3% fall in the first half of 1998.

Audiovisual makers slowed the fall by shifting to flat cathode-ray tube TVs from ordinary CRT models. "We can expect a turnaround towards the year-end," said an official at Sony Corp. (6758). Other makers are also expected to release new flat TV models for the year-end shopping season.
