Jim: I understand your concern about the proliferation of "political correctness." It is one of the reasons I have generally avoided posting for some time, despite having read almost all 8,900 posts on this thread, and a few others I follow on a regular basis.

2-2-8 (er-er-ba) refers to February 28, 1947. The government violently crushed a peaceful demonstration against police brutality. The Chinese government sent troops to Taiwan in response to this and other agitation. The troops massacred thousands in their march from port to Taipei. Some people say 30,000 were killed during this time. As I understand it, many of the island's "best and brightest" were particular targets.
