Jim, here's my interpretation of the sentence:

They loathed him. The jury took one look at the unredeemable, despicable example of humanity that sat before them, sneering smugly, and to a person they all knew he was guilty. They had no idea why he was guilty, but his arrogant look, snarling lips, greased back hair and dead-looking eyes reminded them of a merciless, soulless killer shark. They hoped he was accused of murder so they could send him to the gallows.

Imagine their surprise when the proceeding began and they discovered the object of their intended vengeance was the defense attorney!

"They didn't like him so he must have been able to commit the crime is what transpired in there mind even though they didn't know that."
