To play croquet really well takes an extraordinary amount of skill and no small amount of strategic thinking. Yet, to play it well enough to simply be a piker having a good time requires almost none, unlike say golf or tennis.

At Baylor, I was a member of a group that often played croquet on weekends on one of the university lawns. We used to dress up in F. Scott Fitzgeraldish sorts of costumes that we got at a costume store. It was all kinds of fun. I don't think we took the Hoyle book with us though.

the appeal is playing dress-up at my advanced age - and not having to play alone
