HVN, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "push back." In any event, once we get this far into a discussion of this type, then it makes sense to differentiate between bandwidth, which is a spectral consideration, versus throughput, which often is a function of the manner in which algorithms or modulation schemes are applied to line coding. What Gilder may have been referring to was some form of compression, or modulation scheme, but I am unaware of the specific tech which you're referring to. If you can be more specific, it would be helpful. Throughput, in any event, is not the same parameter as bandwidth. They are in many ways related to one another, but they are different parameters.
