AOL is winning the technology battle over instant messaging but may lose the war as industry pressure grows for a way to allow the hugely popular service become as universal as e-mail. After more than a week of fighting Microsoft Corp. and others AOL executives made their clearest statement yet they will support an industry task force working to develop an open messaging standard. At the same time AOL formed its own advisory committee on the issue composed mainly of executives from companies well-known as Microsoft adversaries including Sun Microsystems, Novell, RealNetworks and Apple Computer. America Online Inc (AOL)

Internet provider AOL Canada and INFOSPACE.COM INC said they signed a deal under which Infospace will provide Canadian business and people directories, as well as mapping services, online for AOL. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. It was not immediately clear how extensive the mapping service would be. AOL Canada, operated by AMERICA ONLINE INC, has more than 130,000 subscribers. InfoSpace.com, based in Redmond, Wash., also offers classified ads, news, stock quotes and TV listings to Internet service providers. (Reuters 02:42 PM ET 08/02/99)

An alliance between SUN MICROSYSTEMS INC and AMERICA ONLINE INC's Netscape said it expects a 75% increase in customers in Asia in its 1999/2000 (July-June) financial year. "We expect growth rate somewhere in the region of 75% year-on-year throughout the region," Stephen Furney-Howe, vice president for the Sun-Netscape Alliance in Asia Pacific, told a news conference. He said there were "hundreds of customers" in Asia using the two companies' electronic commerce products, which were grouped together last month under a single brand called i-Planet. BMFM: Where have you been hiding ? And where is your buddy Gabor ? Used to enjoy your banter on CIEN thread. RE: AOL, looks like dead meat to me too, especially after penetrating 200 DMA today. OTOH, the SUN-NETSCAPE alliance seems intriguing !
