Good observations on the newspapers.

I agree, the online versions of most papers are not nearly as crisp as their paper counterparts.

When I implied otherwise, I was being lazy.

Because the fact is, the paper versions all have elements in common. No matter where you pick up a newspaper (paper, not electronic), there will be common elements: column width, white space, layout and fonts.

And you're right, some do it better than others, The New York Times being the obvious and brightest best. Including their online version.

There's a reason Microsoft Word, Netscape Communicator, et. al. default to the Times New Roman font.

Column width is important for those of us who scan. I am continually confused at web sites that ask me to read all the way across a monitor's width. And I consistently abandon such sites.

Look at the right side of the screen using 1024x758?!!!

Re: Newspaper Design

RTev, it may very well be that the design of the online version of The New York Times is better than that of The Washington Post.

But I nevertheless prefer the online version of The Washington Post.

Why? Simple. Because you can view any article published in The Washington Post within the past few weeks for free. For any back article in The New York Times (with the exception of book reviews and a few other items), you have to pay.

In the end, content is more important than design. That applies to SI as well.
