Hello Stephen,

ZeroPlus has an interesting idea ... but I'm not impressed. They seem to be trying to push an old, more difficult concept into the Internet.

Although domain names are still not perfect, they are much better than a random string of digits ... and people are able to handle e-mail addresses just fine. If you were to look at the work of the IETF with respect to "Instant Messaging and Presence Protocol" they are going to be using e-mail-like naming for everything ...

As for AOL, they are far ahead of the pack already on this front with AOL Instant Messenger and ICQ. Each of these tools provides a way to instantly resolve a user to their IP address, and to launch a variety of communications applications. I use this all the time for NetMeeting and CU-SeeMe "calls" ...

And these applications provide a real extended benefit ... they include presence information. Why call me if I'm not there? Yes, to leave a message ... but maybe I really want to reach you in real-time.

I think that ZeroPlus is simply a portal play by E-Net to try and get their proprietary products out into the market ...

Excellent, thanks. This is just as I expect. Of course, there is some serious circuit switched pricing pressure, however, as long as the access comes as a freebie with data service, then, away we go.
