I can't speak for New England, but the maritimes in late summer are fantastic. I highly recommend Nova Scotia, and maybe a quick ferry trip over to PEI.

OT - I went to Halifax, Nova Scotia and Cape Breton in 1996...I really enjoyed it...

OT (like there is such a thing on this thread):

I think that Nova Scotia is a pretty cool place, definitely go to
Cape Breton Island while you are there. You might consider taking
a ferry to Newfoundland from N.S., the drive up the west coast to
L'Anse Aux Meadows (sp?), where the Vikings had a settlement in
the 11th century is pretty nice as well.

You might consider stopping at Acadia National Park in Maine on
the way to or from NS, as well.
