ExciteAtHome denies merger, but sees deals

America Online Inc (NYSE:AOL - news) and other Internet services have been campaigning to get access to the system, arguing that the cable systems that own it should be governed by the open access rules of television broadcasters.

But Bell said that ExciteAtHome had no plans to give away the valuable real estate of its start page, and it will seek ''fair value'' from other users wanting to use it.

Bell said ExciteAtHome would try to ''avoid the fate of Netscape,'' which was the default page for Web surfers in the early days of the commercial Internet before Yahoo, Excite and others gradually took over the space by broadening their content offerings and marketing themselves aggressively....<<
