I also watch Level 2 and can tell you that in June, AVLN was only busy at the ASK. The volume chart I displayed shows AVLN traded 1.6 million shares in June and did not trade even one share prior to June.

AVLN came out with it's first sell/short sell recommendation in June so I doubt he was buying, but rather selling! June short sales were 4.3 million and AVLN had at least 40%. Rather concentrated position.....wouldn't you agree?

Coupling that with the strong sell/sell short recommendation made in July, one can assume that AVLN at least doubled it's position which would garner 40-50% of the short interest in July. Again, a rather concentrated position! July figures are not yet available.

Of course, AVLN could just be an astute trader that bet the house against the ODP approving the LTK procedure. LOL!
