Yeah, why? Seems to me there will be many new players entering this huge market - and they will use CUBE's codec.

(maybe when TiVO and REPLAY were doing the design of their devices, CUBE's codec wasn't available yet so the "quickness to market" priority trumped the cheapest "bill of material" and "ease of design" priorities.)

I see, so Sony has a decoder that is used in the encode process, but it cannot do simultaneous encode/decode. So, the box needs a separate decoder so that you can play back MPEG-2 video from the hard disk while the encoder is recording MPEG-2 to the disk.
