What I find interesting is the total lack of awareness of Iridium and Globalstar in Europe

I'm not surprised about that. If you remember I was born in Switzerland. Last time I spent the year in Europe was in 1995. I couldn't believe how densly populated and travelled it had become, it's hard to go into the Alps and get away from people, all these great new highways. Of course things might look a little different in Helsinki. Anyway, Europe doesn't need satphones the way many of us here in US and many other parts of the world do. I've been following G* loosely because of Q but don't own any shares. I wonder like the rest about the pricing schemes.

I'm not sure about the obviousness of cdma2000 "surrounding" EDGE. As far as I know, AT&T, Voicestream, BellSouth and Pacific Bell are all going EDGE and/or W-CDMA

I think the bet is that GPRS and EDGE will provide high enough data rates for quite while to come, economies of scale are great, so what if you have to keep plunking more base stations down to meet capacity. Just like G* and Iridium though, I'd be leery of relying on the global roamer to butter my bread..
