Since announcing its MbTV Networks division and technology back in January, Metabyte has been re-inventing itself with software that automatically learns individual TV viewing habits and creates personalized profiles. The MbTV client software is designed to suggest appropriate programs from an Electronic Program Guide (EPG) and automatically record on Personal TV Recorders (PVRs). The company recently inked a deal with Seagate Technology to develop MbTV-enabled digital VCR products that use Seagate's mass storage technology. And now Metabyte's MbTV Networks division has announced a strategic deal with C-Cube Microsystems to develop a MbTV-enabled Digital Video Recorder (DVR) set-top and PC-based reference designs using C-Cube's DVxplore single-chip real-time video encode/decode MPEG -2 CODEC. Using a mass storage, device a MbTV-enabled DVR can also provide time-shifted viewing and the ability to watch recorded content at the viewer's convenience. "C-Cube and MbTV Networks have a common goal to drive broad adoption of Digital Video Recorders," said Tim Vehling, Director of PC/CODEC Marketing for C-Cube Microsystems, Inc., "By offering a solution that brings together our industry leading MPEG -2 technology with MbTV Networks' personalized television application software, we will enable OEMs to deliver feature-rich products while improving time to market." Calling its MbTV technology "Bandwidth for Brains" (they even trademarked this phrase), Andy Fischer, MbTV Networks Director of Marketing, added that its ability to allow targeted advertising and personalized TV portals will provide e-commerce opportunities for OEMs of this product.
