Xilinx is also creating a new technology that allows you to develop and test a design remotely. A designer can add a feature or fix a problem at a customers location by using the internet. My guess is you will be able to apply the configuration data over the net to a targeted Xilinx.

The Virtex devices use .22u technology and have a capacity of 1M gates. Xilinx has .18u devices that are working at their facility and can run at gigahertz speeds. A 2M gate device is in the works.
