I think human nature will overcome such negativity. Take a look at the folks on this thread- each and every one (including myself) obviously thinks very highly of him or herself - no matter what the general opinion is, if there is a general opinion. That "nattering nabobs" stuff is nonsense, but then look from whence it came.

I hardly think anyone tries to overcome every "good thought" we have ever had- do you have some coalition in mind which does this? I have certainly never met anyone, who lived here, who had such a low opinion of the country. That was certainly not what I was suggesting, and so I must assume you are merely using my post as a means to address your own agenda. We are hardly posting to each other- if we are merely going to post our positions and ignore the other persons post. I don't believe I said anything about rating our ancestors by contemporary standards either- I happen to agree that one should not judge an historical figure outside the context of his or her own time.

You have missed the point of Steve's post, which is what essentially launched this discussion. His point was that it is not, and should not be, an either/or proposition. Check it out.
