In news releases about DWDM I sometimes see some reference to 'protected' fiber rings.

Could anyone precise what 'protected' means?

Articles often refer to the protection of fiber networks against fiber cuts, which occur frequently in city street digging.

I do not see why multiple channels over one fiber would increase the safety of the network.

However I would understand if the WDM platform enabled two way traffic transmission and thus change traffic direction to reach destination following a fiber cut.

Or is the architecture the same as in SONET rings where you most often have two parallel rings and one rings takes on the other's job when required?

Thanks for your help,

Jerome
