The difference is the patents SNDK holds on the CF form factor and various IPs in that area. Their income from royalties are quite high, which means that as CF-like flash ram takes off, they are likely to get their slice of the pie too.

Now, SIII/DIMD really needs to build a Rio that takes type II CF. 128MB and 256MB CFs should be here next yr and the portable jukebox where you can have 4-8hrs of every single song you care to ever listen to in a tiny little gadget in your pocket that you carry around.

Like most people, SNDK got hit badly yesterday. Look carefully at their business model and decide if it looks interesting. To get a good idea of how lucrative this market is, the very simple 96MB CF has a higher margin than the Rio.
