No Typhoon, there is no indication QCOM is getting out of the handset business. And why should they? They have the hottest CDMA handset in the world with the new Thinphone and contrary to the specs published by Nokia, Nokia's standby times don't even come close to the Thinphone. That's what Nokia's customers are learning the hard way. Fortunately, Qualcomm's specs are an accurate indication of what the average consumer can expect. In my opinion, the Q's specs are understated as I consistently get longer times than the published figures for the Thinphone. What kind of damage do you think Nokia's exaggerations will do to customer loyalty? Personally, I think Qualcomm is wise to understate their specs. They know they can sell all the phones they can manufacture so, realizing specs are highly subjective anyway and very location dependent (even more so than w/TDMA) they are using more conservative figures than necessary in the name of building customer loyalty.

Your perception that everyone here is kidding themselves and should instead be scared is supported with what? A lack of CDMA orders from China? That MOT has announced plans to cell CDMA ASICS? Oh, I'm real scared. So, my investment in the Q is now worth the same as it was three weeks ago? O.K., let's say through some earth-shaking news or market crash, the shares drop to $105. Ouch! So then my shares would be worth the same as they were in mid-june :-). Call me blind if you like but until I see signs that this is likely, I will continue to stay invested because I know of no other investment that is as promising as this Gorilla. In a couple of years we can compare notes and see how our investments turned out.

Typhoon - also "lurking" among Qualcomm's astounding list of present and/or future "gold mines" are : OmniTRACS division, Eudora messaging (which Dr. Jacobs slyly mentioned might become more important in the whole Qualcomm equation soon), Digital CineComm, Globalstar, WirelessKnowledge, and the stuff Qualcomm is doing down in Brazil (operating as a phone company, I think).

It is really kind of amazing that all of us peons out here are allowed to participate in this business by merely buying some shares in QCOM and then making sure not to allow ourselves to be "separated from our position."

Jon.

(9:25 addition - I just remembered that QCOM also owns a chunk of Leap Wireless).
