not KNOW a myth to be a myth, we give up something vital- our capacity to
logically separate fantasy from reality.


I agree with the first part -- that if we confuse myth with reality we have a problem. I have trouble with the second part, though, because I think you and I have very different approaches to the term "reality." I think many myths, though not literally true, are intensely an aspect of reality. Poetry can contain more truth than a scientific treatise. Good fiction enhances our understanding of what is real. The reality of ideas is not limited by physical or scientific facts, but goes beyond those to truths that are more than mere fact.
