Sandman,

they practically can make earnings whenever and how high they want to. they've pretty much unsold stock in their books so don't worry 'bout earnings in the short term.

however you're point is right. trying to answer it.

actually, there will be IPO's all the time. maybe they won't shoot up to the sky in the first case (like in the past) but climb more steadily. you're right, they (CMGI) seem to earn less on their investments - BUT: in times like these, even venture funding is more expensive as it had been before. now, with the internet stocks descending, the funding becomes more reasonable for CMGI.
so actually the difference isn't that huge for CMGI.

example:
a company's stock they bought in for let's say 1 $ per share, now only costs 'em some 50 cents per share. After the IPO the stock doesn't sell for 40 bucks like in the pasts but for a mere 15 bucks. so either way it's a huge capital gain again. maybe a bit less but still enough for huge growth.

IPO market may "dry out" but good companies will succeed - in the marketplace and on the stock market. now it comes back to core competencies like the one's of CMGI: a vision and a feeling for the real good ones out there...

not concerned about the internet "perl" CMGI.

regards
sunny

btw i like the AV & RB announcement pretty much.

CMGI will always do well regardless of the IPO market, even if it dries up. CMGI is a share holder of many service providing internet companies that should thrive with time. And as such, that will be reflected on CMGI's earnings and growth. We see and feel the present, but what about the future, there is a chance that future growth will stifle present IPO growth taking into account the percentage of population on the internet now and what will it be in the future. And keep in mind, internet service providing is not bound by demographics.
