Telewest launching speedy Net service

LONDON (CBS.MW) -- The battle for domination of the information superhighway to the home in Britain is set to begin in earnest when Telewest Communications PLC, the cable operator, announces a high-speed internet service for the mass market. According to the Financial Times, Telewest will announce plans Thursday -- in partnership with Microsoft Corp. (MSFT: news, msgs) and Hewlett-Packard (HWP: news, msgs) -- to offer Internet access up to 100 times faster than a conventional personal computer modem. Using a PC cable modem, Telewest (TWSTY: news, msgs) will, from the first quarter of next year, offer customers a gateway to the Internet via a branded portal, which will contain content from Microsoft. The move will step up the pressure on British Telecommunications PLC (BTY: news, msgs), which last week announced its own plans for high-speed Internet access. A Telewest executive said: "We're racing BT along the information superhighway to the consumer's home. And we're in the fast lane with Bill Gates." Financial Times
