David -- ok, I know the dollar yen is a mixed message -- see if this makes sense to you:

1) yen denominated investments are attractive to some people -- pushes up yen.

2) Rising yen puts yen denominated loans which have been converted to dollars put to work in the US market are put at risk by the rising yen -- closing out these positions pushes up yen.

3) Risk of higher yen causes selling of dollar by those who are simply reluctant to own a falling foreign currency -- pushes yen up.

Is this good for Japanese stocks? No. But it is far worse for ours. We are closer to the end of our cycle -- they are closer to the beginning of theirs (if they don't crash and burn on the runway). BTW, it si good to keep in mind the sheer sale of currency market -- $2 trillion dollars PER DAY changes hands in the currency markets -- its unreal.
