Mohan:Intel targets ISPs in India ====================================================================== NEW DELHI, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Chipmaker Intel Corp (NASDAQ:INTC) said on Wednesday that it was keenly targeting India's emerging Internet firms in a new global focus on its less visible networking products. Intel officials said the company was in time for a good start among India's Internet service providers (ISPs) as it launched an initiative to woo an estimated 14,000 ISPs worldwide. "We want to be the leading supplier of building blocks to the Internet economy," Atul Vijaykar, Director, South Asia, for Intel, told a news conference. India opened up its Internet industry to private companies last year, and more than 132 companies have obtained licences to become ISPs. Intel officials said the company hoped to compete aggressively on price terms, aiming to sell products to ISPs at a third of the price offered by competitors. The company's stable of networking products include adapters, hubs, switches and routers, besides servers. It aims to have a dedicated sales channel to sell a variety of Internet-tailored products with a flexible approach on the software that go with them, Vijaykar said. Last month, Intel formed a global unit for communications products and restructured other units, as it strived to go beyond its core business of computer chips. Earlier this week, it announced a joint venture with the Hong Kong-based Pacific Century Group in an effort to bring high-speed Internet access to Asia. Vijaykar said Intel will partner ISPs to sell Internet equipment to their own customers, and assist them with sales and marketing tools, training and content-related services. The company also has an Intel Authorised Solution Provider (IASP) programme to train and equip partners who will provide solutions to customers based on Intel building blocks. The IASPs, which currently number 20, are expected to reach 50 by the end of the year, Vijaykar said. +91-11-301-4043, delhi.newsroom@reuters.com)) Copyright 1999, Reuters News Service
