Myth, they were mentioned in the WSJ and there may be a management shake-up

The prospect of higher rates inflicted some damage on financial stocks. Chase Manhattan eased 9/16 to 78 13/16. Consumer lenders Providian Financial dropped 4 1/2 to 86 1/4, and Capital One Financial shed 2 3/8 to 43 9/16.

Meanwhile, the stock market's weakness has begun to weigh on the brokerage sector. Shares of Charles Schwab fell 4 9/16 to 37 7/8, Merrill Lynch moved down 1 3/8 to 67 1/4, and Goldman Sachs Group declined 2 to 60 13/16.<?i>
