Because auxiliary power will be the first use for fuel cells in production vehicles. The BMWs of this world have huge investments in making existing engines which they have improved tremendously over the past few years from the emissions POV and MPG numbers. They don't have much invested in making alternators and rubber drive belts. To go to a totally new drive train will be extraordinarily expensive for them. 5 to 10 years from now I could see totally SOFC powered vehicles.

Is this the company that Global Thermoelectric competed with for the truck "heater"? Heat=Energy=Electricity in any sequence.

I believe the GLE website mentions gasoline and hybrids. A vehilcle with 100% battery power....and charged with a small SOFC fueled by gasoline sounds like a good idea. Would not have to be BMW.
GM testing a full size bus in New York.......runs on batteries and has a small diesel to keep them charged. Should be easy to replace the diesel with a SOFC. Battery technology also improving. Sounds to easy.:) :)........raisin
