RE: JDSU. I feel comfortable with the company long term. Exciton leads me to believe that the barriers to entry are significant and they dominate the space.

let me know if you find anything interesting in your dd.

For your search you might want to focus on the original two firms: UNPH and JDS Fitel, given the very recent merger. I recall reading a superb article on UNPH and DWDM at the George Gilder web page sometime ago (was a freebie to attract new customers). If you can snag it its worth a look.

For reviewing the JDS Fitel past, you might want to do a search through a few Canadian sources, given the northern heritage. Suggest Yahoo Canada, the Globe and Mail or the National Post - leading newspapers. Also, there is a Cdn magazine called Cdn Business which had an extensive article on JDS about a year ago. I don't have URLS but all are likely easily reachable from Yahoo Canada or Canada.com.
Finally, you might try and access old JDS Fitel or UNPH threads if they're still archived here.

I have been in JDSU (via JDS Fitel) for over a year now - and expect to hold long indefinitely. Capacity at the Ottawa (JDS) site continues to expand rapidly. The JDS side of the company demonstrated consistent 80% plus annual growth last few years - which I expect to continue. While I'm not as swept up on the UNPH side, I do understand that it was growing rapidly, although not as quickly as the passive component JDS side. Synergies of this merger are impressive and the leadership combination would appear to be very complementary with JDS guy the daily COO and UNPH guy the "deal maker". Upside potential continues to be enormous in the context of "can't get enough bandwidth".

Cheers

OT Jill, I saw your conversation with Uncle on the MSFT thread. I must be mildly disagreeable with your statement I find this thread as useful as your stellar G&K in teaching me to be a better investor. I wouldn't dare post this on MSFT because of the flack that would result.

The MSFT thread is often a magnet to a host of non-constructive interactions. I have been guilty of participating in these interactions and even been provocative a time or two. Can you imagine that kind of behavior on this thread? Uncle has set a standard here that we all not only adhere to, but enforce.

OTOH, the options discussion on MSFT thread is very good, indeed.

It helps that G/K is not about any particular stock, so the cheerleading is minimal (except for Q <g>).

It helps that we follow Frank's example and that he is so consistent with his demeanor.

Frankly, (pun intended) I got caught up in the CPQ and INTC threads last year where civility is non-existent. Those threads give new SI subscribers a poor example of how to best use this incredible resource and communications medium.

Perhaps I can help interpret on the JDSU post. He basically states that JDSU has the experience and expertise to deal with the more exotic materials used (needed actually) to produce the electro-optic widgets. Other firms have similar expertise (IBM, Lucent, Vitesse), but this level of expertise is not as widespread as for typical chips employing silicon. My evaluation is that having this experience coupled with the design/marketing capabilities to produce the products demanded by the customers is indeed an advantage. In this industry time to market is key. It drives the market share assuming the marketing effort is not pathetic. Knowing how to handle the materials helps in this aspect.

I too, am considering a play in this arena, but am cautious about the valuation. Not so much as for the long term value, but rather my sense of the upcoming market psychology. FWIW I think LU is a good play here too. The downside (or is it upside) is that LU is not a "pure" play and I still have my doubts about their nimbleness.
