RESEARCH ALERT - Merrill starts Interliant

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW YORK, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Merrill Lynch said Wednesday it
had initiated coverage of Web site management company
Interliant Inc. INIT.O with ratings of near-term accumulate
and long-term buy, and a 12- to 18-month price objective of
$20.
-- Interliant is a leading provider of Web site hosting,
application hosting, and enhanced Internet services. Merrill
said the market for such services is expected to grow to more
than $30 billion in 2003 from $1 billion in 1998.
-- Interliant has grown, and intends to continue to grow,
both internally and through acquisition, Merrill said, adding
that its consolidation strategy is a good one in a fragmented
industry but comes with significant integration and operational
challenges.
-- The key issues with regard to Interliant, in Merrill's
opinion, are the company's ability to successfully integrate,
manage and grow acquired businesses, and accelerate the growth
of its application hosting business.
-- Interliant had a 7 million-share IPO priced in early
July at $10 a share. It surged 85 percent in its first day of
trading to a high of $18.50.
-- Interliant raised $70 million in its IPO. Merrill was
the lead underwriter.
-- Shares of Interliant were trading at 13-5/8, off
2-13/16, on the Nasdaq stock market.
