It's heartening to see this thread coming to life again. Seems to be much underlying optimism.

Arguably, About.com's popularity (isn't this always the way) is spurring others to mimic this 'guiding'.

There is also a precedent in the Open Directory Project (www.dmoz.com) - a lower cost model, to be sure, but not all that useful for the user, IMO.

I guess About.com will be like the 'Cadillac' of the guide sites. Time will tell if they can afford to pay their guides for what is some fairly inconsistent-quality guiding.
