* NDS VideoGuard to enable Madritel subscribers to access advanced digital services such as Internet, distance learning and information services through their television sets

Madrid -- NDS, the leading provider of digital broadcasting systems, today announced that it has been awarded the conditional access system contract from Madritel, the Madrid operator of fibre optic integrated telecommunications services that is building one of Europe's most advanced digital cable networks. NDS' VideoGuard conditional access system will be implemented in Madritel's digital cable headend and its subscriber's set-top boxes.

The contract follows NDS' win in May this year of a competitive tender to provide an MPEG -2 digital platform for DVB services for Madritel. The contract for 12 multiplexes, using NDS' latest compression products for cable, was awarded by Sirti, a Telecom Italia company, who are the systems integrators for the project.

"This contract is an important endorsement of NDS' leadership in digital broadcasting and we are delighted to be working with Madritel. Digital cable TV will play a major role in the delivery of entertainment and information to the home, with increased viewer programming choice and new services such as interactive advertising and home shopping," says Dr. Abe Peled, CEO of NDS.

Madritel carried out an exhaustive technical investigation of all the conditional access options on the market and decided that the NDS system together with the company's knowledge and experience of deploying digital broadcasting systems would best support it in launching Europe's most advanced network. NDS' conditional access systems are already serving broadcasters such as DirecTV, BSkyB, Star TV, Sky Television New Zealand, Sky Latin America and FOXTEL and offer the proven capabilities and technology to enable Madritel to offer new, exciting television services to its customers.

The NDS VideoGuard system will enable Madritel to offer advanced services to its subscribers through personalised smart card access. Such digital services will include navigating the Internet, information services, distance learning, remote banking, remote working, remote surveillance and audio visual content. The system allows the subscriber to view an electronic programme guide and the possibility of interactive communications between the subscriber and the operator through a messaging service. The service will also offer emergency service bulletins and allow for voting, pay per view and video on demand.

Under 200 DVD....

Costco was selling a no name DVD player for $199. I don't know if they still are.

Usubstantiated rumor was that it's a unbranded Toshiba. The rumor also said it had a Zoran decoder. I have no idea if that's true, but it would be kinda ironic no?
