JH:" Italian CellPhone Culture "

...cute article in this morning's NY Times about how Italians are experiencing a boom in cell-phones and incorporating them into their unique Roman culture.

"...Cell phones are also studied intensely by Italian semiologists. Stefano Bartezzaghi, a semiologist in Milano, wrote an esoteric essay for La Stampa, a Turin daily, saying of the cell phone: "Beyond being a status symbol, it has strong quality of a toy and of a fetish, pleasant to touch, reconfigure, personalize the ring, and care for, by re-charging the batteries."

"The object attracts the same artificial attentions as the Tamagotchi," he added, referring to the Japanese virtual pet-toy craze of a few years back, "but also the periodic and structured devotion of the Rosary." (^_^)
