Just my opinion, but the chance of paying off the debt is quite remote. In my lifetime, anyway.

While income streams of bonds would decrease, values of stocks and bonds would soar. Thus retirees could increasing take a "total return" approach to withdrawing necessary funds from their portfolios to live on.
