Schlumberger making sure all MOU end up in G* piggy bank Press Release For Immediate Release: July 28, 1999 Anti-Line Tapping Device Eliminates Fraud And Cuts Operating Costs In Payphone Networks Cost-effective one-box-per-line solution for isolated payphones First anti-line tapping device for wireless and satellite payphone networks PARIS, France, July 28, 1999 -- Schlumberger has launched a compact high-security anti-line tapping module for its family of payphones. Called Smalto Box, the module is not necessarily installed at the exchange but can be operated near the payphone, providing effective anti-fraud measures to operators. The Smalto Box is also the only anti-line tapping solution for wireless payphone applications, including the new Globalstar network. Payphone fraud, in its diverse forms, reduces operator revenue, jeopardising the viability of nascent networks in expanding countries or undermining services at private sites such as hospitals, schools and holiday apartments. Until now, installing anti-line tapping (ALT) measures has usually been too expensive, requiring equipment to be installed at the local exchange or central switch. Often, this equipment is designed to provide ALT services across several lines, further increasing the cost to operators trying to protect just one or two lines. Smalto Box provides the first line-by-line solution without compromising protection. The Schlumberger Smalto Box is independent of exchange type and, most importantly, is powered from the phone line, making it completely stand-alone. This unique method of powering an ALT device, combined with an extended operating temperature, allows the module to be situated almost anywhere along the phone line. Conventional ALT techniques rely on the 48V power rail within the exchange rack; this is not available in the wireless or satellite applications, which are deployed by operators to provide public services in areas where terrestrial cabling is not installed. Now, these operators can use the line between the payphone terminal and radio transceiver to power the Smalto Box module, enabling ALT to be deployed on the wireless loop for the very first time. In addition, Smalto Box is integrated into the Globalstar-compliant payphone recently launched by Schlumberger, enabling operators to minimise revenue loss due to phone fraud from the very beginning. "Operators of private or small public payphone networks alike are looking for a cost-effective solution for anti-line tapping in order to control costs and sustain a viable revenue stream," states Marc Lefour, Product Marketing Manager for Schlumberger. "Smalto Box answers this requirement, and gives the customer more flexibility in its usage while reducing purchase and operating costs." The Schlumberger Smalto Box module defeats line tapping, including dialling manipulation, by combining the dialled number with a randomly generated number sequence to create signatures that are transmitted by the payphone on a regular basis. If no signature is received or if it is wrong, Smalto Box terminates the call. Utilising a random number component within the signature ensures that the confirmation protocol cannot be copied and replayed for a subsequent call, ensuring on-going security against line tapping.
