Rick the Vet - Sidebar. Did you know that in 1968 Trudeau announced plans to cut the natives off, do a one time deal for compensation, and from then on they would be treated as Canadians, no better or worse than any other Canadian? Exactly what we should do now since our policy has only succeeded in turning them into a welfare state. The public outcry though was so loud that he backed off, a situation that I don't think would occur today. PS - Trudeau's Indian Affairs Minister and co-author of the plan in 1968 was a young friend named Jean Chretien.
