Why can't they just give the things away and can the 3 year ISP obligation. Is there no such thing as a truly free lunch?

Rumor and wild speculation has it that ISP charges (at least modem dial-up) may be a passing fancy as good old corporate America realizes that it's easier to entice potential customers to e-commerce by not charging admission.

I read about that free mac give away. Not sure of all the details, but apparently there's a BUNCH of requirements needed. It's too the point where most people won't want to bother.
