I believe this is how it works:

Messages from you are in the Outbox folder. Unread messages to you are in the Inbox folder. Once you read a public message it's moved from there to the Trash folder where it stays briefly. Private messages can be transferred into a permanent folder or trashed. If you reply, the message is transferred automatically to the private-message section of the trash.
