Now to avoid becoming too windy
Ah, don't worry about it. I don't. And I fear that I'm about to prove that.

re possible slowdown.

First, let me say that I don't know for sure what's happening on their servers. I can only see what everyone else can see. I have, however, taken the time to study the html spit out by the beta server, so I can make an educated guess about what's happening.

So what I meant by the speed issue applies to this or any other option that's added to a page. The option will slow down rendering because it forces the server to run through a code segment that wouldn't be there if there were no option.

On SubjectMarks, it would have retrieve preferences and then go through something like this when it prints the message number in the list:
Does this user want to see ten at a time?
If yes, then format URL this way
Else format URL this way.

I'm not saying that the option will slow down the page, but rather that it might.

And you ask:
but why in the world would anyone want to do that if they have the option of viewing ten or a hundred at a time.

I suppose it depends on the subjects one reads. I tend to read subjects where not even this post would be considered long.

There are, however, a couple that I look at where folks get into a string of one-liners and other forms of banter. I quickly switch to 10-at-a-time when I encounter those posts or I go back to the list and select only the messages that look interesting.

Mostly, though, I read everything in the subjects I monitor and when I'm doing that I prefer to have the message stand on its own. I like the now-gray bar (although I'd prefer olive) above and below the message, setting it apart and letting it stand on its own. (Ahem.)

I also like the extra information provided on the screen in one-message format, like the ability to quickly glance at all the replies to a message and then get back to the main message.

And another factor. I use a long window so I rarely have to scroll single messages. Just press the Next button.

Since I have a fairly good 8-hop connection to the server, even the beta engine is usually fast enough to handle that well.
