I have the same concern. While I have made some money shorting over the past few weeks, once we hit bottom (assuming we do), I'll need to figure out which stocks make attractive longs - and I believe it may be difficult to do.

Even if we make it through August and September without an interest rate hike, I think that wider-spread concern over Y2K uncertainty will set in by October (again, the concern is more about what will happen internationally than domestically) - and it's hard to imagine what major events or good news might move markets higher between Oct and the end of the year.

Who knows, perhaps some sort of optimistic euphoria will settle upon investors by the end of the year so that we can welcome in the millennium on a high note (I can see analysts on CNBC talking about how the 2000s will be so much better than the 1900s). But somehow, I doubt it.
