You nailed it.

With the shortage of motherboards AMD is rumored to be stockpiling 1M+ Athlons. If they were to be recalled, there would be some major pain. But even if there is an FDIV scale bug discovered, I don't think that AMD would be forced by the OEMs and the end users to recall the parts. There is much more of good will toward AMD than toward Intel and everybody understands that AMD simply can't afford to do it. So at worst they would have to dump the inventory at $100-200 ASP and give some refunds for the parts already shipped.
