HOUSTON--Compaq Computer, the world's largest personal computer maker, today said it tapped Flint Brenton to head a newly created e-commerce unit, as part of a push by the company to do more business over the Internet.

As vice president of e-commerce, Brenton will be responsible for managing the company's worldwide array of e-commerce activities including its Compaq.com Web site and other programs driving Internet-based marketing and direct sales.

The new unit was part of the Houston-based computer maker's overhaul announced in June. The company's strategy is to strengthen its presence outside the realm of personal computer sales.

Shares of Compaq today fell 0.94 to 22.56 on the New York Stock Exchange, amid another tough day for technology stocks. The stock is off a high of 51.25 earlier in 1999, before sluggish PC sales, problems integrating its Digital Equipment acquisition, and managment turmoil took their toll.
