I think Bryan should answer some of these, but I'll try to tackle a couple from a pure user perspective (even if I do happen to be a gawddamn apologist for the Turbo SI as opposed to the fossil SI <heh>). after a public or private message TO ME is read, it is moved to trash, where it will remain for 48 hours, at which time it is emptied? Yes and the only record of a public message TO ME that i have read but failed to place in a folder would be on the thread? Yes. Unless someone knows one of those nifty searches like the "s=user" thing that will work with recipients. (I tried r=user, but that didn't do it.) and there will be no record of a private message TO ME that i have failed to place in a folder?* Correct. A private message to which you have responded will remain in the Trash for 48 hours. Otherwise, it will stay in your inbox until you file it or delete it. after i compose a public or private message, will the only record of it (other than on the thread if it is public) exist only if i have created a folder for it and filed it there? No. Messages you compose are stored in the Outbox. I don't know how many are stored there and whether the list limit is time-based or number-based, but there are a bunch of messages in there.
