PB,

<The story posted has another side, which he, and you, totally missed. The article was decidedly biased to the negative. There is a big upside to this, if you read between the lines.>

Clearly, I didn't read between the lines the way you did. Could you tell me what I missed?

<...the information contained in the article is extremely positive for Intel, and the box makers.>

I did not find anything positive about missing Q4. As I have said many times before, Q4 time frame product release makes the channel absorption nearly impossible for all but the nimblest of the players like Dell (and other direct marketers). But, you see something extremely positive and I would love to hear what it is.

Chuck

P.S.: Check out the not-so hastily done PIII-600 launch - there are not too many systems to be found in the channel.

< I believe the balance of the information contained in the article is extremely positive for Intel, and the box makers.>

Hm, I am still pondering over the possible reasoning behind your statement.

It is clear that Intel is combining the qualification of the laptop Coppermine and the desktop Coppermine. So the design verification job is halved and so that is a positive for Intel. The reliability qualifiction will be separate anyway, since the laptop and desktop versions use different package configurations, so there is no saved time or effort.

So why is it positive for the boxmakers ? Maybe since the new design is faster, will faster laptop Coppermines be available sooner than expected ? Or since the Coppermine problems are fixed sooner than expected , will the desktop version be available sooner than the November date ?
